Tenkyu and Yaguruma / 天球と矢車

May 5 is Children’s Day in Japan. Koinobori are decorations that celebrate and wish for children’s healthy growth. This year, I built the top section. At the very top is the tenkyu, a marker meant to be seen by the gods in the sky. Below it is the yaguruma, a wind wheel shaped like arrows and used as a charm to ward off evil. Both of these spin in the wind on real koinobori.

5月5日、日本の子どもの日。鯉のぼりは子どもの健やかな成長を願う飾り。今年はその先端部分を作ってみた。一番上にあるのが天球。天球は天空の神様に見つけてもらうための目印。その下には矢車。矢をモチーフにした魔除けです。いずれも本物は風で回る。
